During the Fair, the Plia got so much acclaim from audiences that many visitors moved away from the stand with some samples without asking for permission… As a result of this unhorthodox compliment the chairs were tied with chains for safety. With the Plia chair the designer, Giancarlo Piretti, has revolutionized the concept of folding chair, and his study on the “three-disc hinge” is considered a stroke of genius. The combination of steel and polypropylene frame has paved the way for Plia which has become a cult object. Plia represents the realization of “democratic design” and it is nowadays exposed at the design sector of the MoMA in New York. This minimalist and highly elaborate chair is a re-design of the classic model No. 14. The designer divided its six pieces by two and 002 emerged – a chair made from only three pieces. Two of them – the manually processed bends – are identical and form legs, backrest and armrests all in one.
A chair deliberately abstract in its composition and, for this reason, comfortable in unpredictable ways. Seemingly carved into a block, Toy speaks a language of sharp and broad plans that make it different from other molded polypropylene chairs. In this connotation Toy is unique even within the design corpus of Philippe Starck.
